My name is Shirley Chan owner of Luna Roja. Born to the first generation of immigrants we struggled to get by and being a family of 7 meant more mouths to feed. Growing up, there was no eating out unless it was Sunday, having my own room or bed was out of the question. As a kid, I wanted all the trendy clothes and shoes but my parents were not able to provide as they had to also make sure that my siblings were also being taken care of. As time passed by I eventually began to help my mother pay one or two bills, by then she had become a single mother and I had gotten my first job at 15. I eventually moved out at the age of 17 and life really started giving me my own financial lessons. At age 19 I got a job in the banking world. I wanted to gain money handling experience as I had already gained customer service and retail experience. Now fast forward 9 years later, sadly I’m still here. Not the same bank but still in the banking world. As time had passed me by I lost track of what my goal was. Now I’m almost 30 and I had to remind myself what I want in life. Doing what makes me happy, taking the courage to take that first step towards the life I want to live. Stop caring what people have to say or think about me. I want all women to realize what we can do, how high we can jump if we allow to trust ourselves!
